A Week of Celebrations

Last week was a wonderful week in Room 202!

It started off with Groundhog day on Monday. We looked at the news and discovered that we should be having an early spring, because Balzac Billy did not see his shadow. There was a mix of emotions, as many of the students were loving the winter wonderland. It seems that based on our quickly disappearing snow, I would say Balzac Billy may be correct!

Thursday was our 100th day of school. We did many activities that involved 100, such as: made a trail mix with 100 items and graphed those items, wrote a story about being 100, attempted to do 100 sets of 10 different activities in the gym, and much more. It was a very fun filled educational day.

Here are a few pictures from our day!

We started with pancakes and fruit. If you look carefully at the 1st picture, you will notice their breakfast even says 100!

Next we wrote about being 100 and after lunch I surprised them with their old selves. There were a lot of laughs shared during this time!

During art we even made sculptures using 100 pieces of Lego! What creative students we have in this class.

Now for this week! We have another busy week coming up, so be sure to check back here to see what is ahead.

 Week at a Glance
 February 9 - 13, 2015

Monday
- it's your last night to collect donations for tomorrow's Dance-A-Thon! Forms are due first thing in the morning.

Tuesday - it's Dance-A-Thon day! Please remember to bring back your forms and envelope. Our class is dancing from 11:30am-12:00pm. Family members are welcome to come and join us for our fun 30 minutes of dancing! Remember to dress western.

Wednesday - we have the Grade 3/4's hosting our celebration assembly at 1pm in the gym. Come see what's been happening in Grade 3/4.

Friday - today is our Valentines celebration day. We will be exchanging Valentines, playing games, and enjoying wonderful snacks. If you volunteered to bring a snack, your child will get a note in their agenda on Monday. Thanks in advance for helping us celebrate, we really appreciate it!

Just a quick overview of a few subject areas upcoming this week.

Language Arts - in writing this week, we are working on the craft of revising. In word work we are focussing on the cute letter combos of "au" and "aw". Whenever these letters get together they just make us go aawwww. There will be no words of the week going home as we have built our practice into our weekly work.

Science - we are wrapping up our Liquids unit with 3 fun experiments. We will see what happens to sitting water when it is exposed to air, and discover the 3 states of water: liquid, solid, and gas. Be sure to check up and find out what we do each day!

Math - we are working on adding, and learning different strategies to help us understand and recall number sentences. This week we are working on the strategy of counting on using a number line.

Lastly, we've combined 100th day and Valentines and set a goal to do
100 Acts of Kindness
before we leave school on Friday.

We read the book "Kindness is Cooler Mrs. Ruler" by Margery Cuyler, and decided we could definitely do 100 kind things as a class.
If your child does something kind without being asked please write it in their agenda. At school we talked about how kind things are acts that we do out of the ordinary, not because we want to be noticed, but just because we want to make our class, home, or world better.
Here is a sneak peak at how our bulletin board is looking so far. Stay tuned to see if we reach our goal!

Be kind, have a great week, and remember that there is no school from February 14-22. Students return to school on Monday, February 23, 2015. Enjoy the break!
