Christmas Concert Week!!! Dec 7-11

Our Christmas Concert Twinkle and Shine is this week! Please carefully read all the information below to make sure you are ready for the show. Students have been working so hard, and are almost ready to put on a terrific evening of entertainment!

Wednesday, December 9, 2015 - Last names A-J are performing.
Thursday, December 10, 2015 - Last names K-Z are performing.
Dress rehearsal is at 1:00pm the afternoon of your child's designated concert.
Evening concerts begin at 6:30pm, and school doors will open at 6:00pm. Students are to be dropped off in designated classroom no later than 6:10pm.
Wednesday meeting classroom: Mrs. Lynch's room (Room 200)
Thursday meeting classroom: Mrs. Reimer's room (Room 202)

All flashlights need to be at school no later than Monday in order for students to practice their songs with them.
Students are asked to please wear their concert attire on their dress rehearsal day as well.
Concert dress for Grade 1-2's: a red or green shirt, and dark bottoms.

Please bring a new pair of socks (or a few pairs) to donate to our Sock it to Em' campaign as a your entry for the concert. Feel free to bring them to the evening performance or send them to school early.
Remember that parking will be at a premium on these nights. If you are able to walk and make an adventure of it, that would be wonderful. Otherwise know that it will be very busy and please practice patience and cautiousness.

5 Days of Christmas - each day for the last week of school, we will all meet in the gym and participate in various festive activities to build community and celebrate the upcoming Christmas season.

A Peek at Last Week
Most weeks we have a making words day. Students are given a variety of letters, and their first job is always to colour the vowels, and then put the letters in alphabetical order. From there, they listen to the words, and build many words using their letter combinations. We always start with small simple words, and work up the the secret word which uses all the letters. We've been working on the reading strategy chunky monkey, and this week we focussed on the 'ing' chunk while making words. Based on our learning last week, if you say "ing, ing" your child should respond "i-n-g". 
Secret Blog Question: What was the secret word from making words last week? Blake and Caira both have it figured out in the pictures above. Write the secret word in your agenda! Hint we used these letters 'c, g, i, k, n, o, s, t'.
When we are working hard, students love being rewarded with a brain break. This is one example of what that could look like. As the Christmas holidays approach, I highly recommend checking out GoNoodle. It is full of different activities to get your child moving, as well as quieter activities to settle busy minds, and practice mindfulness.
 Last week we focussed on the reading strategy of "sequencing". We are using gingerbread as a theme this December, and therefore used the book the Gingerbread Man to learn and practice sequencing. Good readers think and talk about the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Here Kenna and Wyatt completed a sequencing activity that tells what order the Gingerbread Man was chased in.
This week we will learn how good readers "make connections" and will be connecting and comparing a variety of gingerbread books.
