Day #1 - Here We Go!

Here we go with our first official week of online learning! How are you guys feeling? I'm excited to see what we can accomplish and learn this week. I'm sure there will be bumps, as there often is with new things, but let's work together and have some fun learning in this new way!

For this next week while we are still all getting the groove of home learning, please do what you can to keep up, however know there is so much grace this week as we figure this out! Also, don't ever hesitate to contact me if you are struggling. Send me a message or email and I'm happy to get in touch with you!
Each day there will be "activities" that are expected to be completed. Most of the time, completion of these activities is based on trust :) However, sometimes I will ask you to submit your activity on Class Dojo - or send me a Dojo message with a picture. Each activity has a suggested time on it. This is a suggested minimum.
I will also continue to post "challenges". Your goal is to complete 1-2 challenges each day, depending how much time you have. You are always allowed to complete them all if you want!
This week we will be setting up lots of sites, and things may take longer. Complete what you can!

At the end of the week you can let me know how things went by sending me a picture of the schedule if you can!

**parents: I'm adding to the Home Learning Info page today and this week. If you ever have questions I encourage you to check this page for notes and information. It is a work in progress, but hopefully it helps!**

Activities for Day #1
Activity #1 - READING : Read for 20 mins
I suggest starting by reading your Good Fit Book #1 (this is tucked inside the "writing about reading" notebook in your take home package), and then doing some free reading after if you have time.
** if you didn't pick up a take home package - please have them sign into Kids A-Z and complete a book on there. They need to read it, listen to it, and complete the quiz. This could be done over 2 days also.**
Remember that with limited books for many of us, online reading is a great option for free reading time.
I suggest Kids A-Z or Epic to find some good online books, or whatever platform you have!

Activity #2 - WRITING: Write for 20 mins
In your take home package was a new notebook with the label - Writer's Notebook. This notebook will be used to go most of your writing assignments. Please always write the day at the top of the page you are beginning on.
Todays writing prompt: how are you feeling about online learning? What is one thing you are excited about, and one thing your are worried about or have questions about?
I challenge you to write in full sentences, to add as many details as you can, and to write for the full 20 minutes.
Feel free to send me a picture in your portfolio or Dojo message if you'd like feedback on your writing!

Activity #3 - WORD WORK: 10 mins
Login to Spelling City to find your pre-test. Complete the pre-test, and write all your words out correctly on a piece of paper.
We are all going to work on our sight words for the next little while. Just a reminder, that if you've been tested on a word that means I do expect you to spell it right in your daily writing.

Activity #4 - MATH: 20 mins
Check your lethsd email (your password is your school login info - it's also on your login sheet in your take home package). In your inbox there is an email from me with a note, and login instructions to PRODIGY math. Use that information to login, and try it out for 20 mins.

Activity #5 - MATH 10-20mins
Look at the picture of the whiteboard below. Use whatever you need to and solve the questions. Try and show your thinking! Feel free to send a picture through Dojo if you want to show off your work or get feedback.

The following challenges below are meant to enhance your child's learning. I challenge students to complete as many as they want or can.

Challenge #1 - Join us on Zoom!
Join a class meeting. Now, I'm not going to lie, this feels a little ambitious on our first official day of online learning, but I wanted to give this as an option. My current plan is to host a whole class online meeting every Monday at 2:30pm, and every Thursday at 10:30am. The idea behind this is that it gives you a chance to say hello to your friends, you can ask questions about the work you're assigned, we could share work we've done, and just have a few minutes to connect.
I have set this up as an event in Class Dojo on the Class Story page. There is a link in the event for you to click and join the conversation. If you are feeling brave today, I encourage you to join Miss McKay and myself for our first online class meeting!
** parents for this first meeting I would like it if you are present just to assist. Students will be muted on entry to the meeting, and I will unmute them once I've explained a few ZOOM courtesies. You don't need to be in the picture for the whole time, just if you can show you are present and give permission for your child to be in the meeting**

Challenge #2
Begin decorating your Writer's Notebook. You could colour a picture, cut it out, and glue it on. You could print off things from the internet, or cut out pictures from old magazines. The idea behind this is to create not just a notebook, but something you can keep as a time capsule during this bizarre time away from "normal" school.
I encourage you to complete this challenge this week, and send me a picture by Friday of your notebook!

Challenge #3
Spend some time logging into and setting up your computer.
We will need a combination of the following things over the next little while. This list may evolve, but having the following setup would be a huge timesaver:
1. bookmark www.reimersroom.blogspot.com
2. Spelling City - login, make sure your information works
3. School email - link above under math
4. Kids A-Z
5. EPIC - parents check your email for instructions and invite to set this up.
6. Prodigy math

Challenge #4
Listen to me read Wonder! Have you been able to keep up?
Monday March 30 read aloud

That's all for today! Hope to see you on ZOOM!
