Welcome parents and students to another great year at Park Meadows Elementary!

Please check back here for monthly updates that will include classroom highlights, calendar information, and just generals points of interest and info! Also check out the "important information" tab to discover a few things about our class and school. The "student links" tab also has some of my favourite education sites for students to explore!

I look forward to getting to know all of you, and working together to make this an amazing year for learning!

Welcome! Happy Spring Apr. 24-28

Hello families of Grade 2-3 students! I hope you all enjoyed a great spring break. I am very excited to be back at Park Meadows, and look forward to learning together as we race to the end of the year!

I will be using Remind 101 as a way to send you updates on classroom happenings, but will also use the blog to keep you up to date. I suggest checking the blog Monday or Tuesday each week, and then for upcoming events I will send a remind note out!

If you click on the link below you should be able to get all set up with Remind.
Please let me know if there are any issues setting up your account, and I will send out a trial run in the first week or two!

You will notice in the first week back that your child is bringing home quite a few items. I did some housekeeping around the classroom over the break and found some work and items that we no longer need at school. Please take a moment to check out your child's work as there are some great things coming home!

Baby Reimer has arrived!

After what felt like a super long wait, Seth Jaxon Reimer joined the outside world on Tuesday, February 23, 2016.
His mommy and daddy think he is pretty cute and we just love him so much!

I've already told him many stories about the wonderful Grade 1-2 class I was teaching before he was born. He is excited to come and visit, but it will be a while as he's just too little to be out in public.

I hope everyone is doing really well, and know that I think of you all often and miss you all lots!

Keep learning, reading, playing, and being the amazing bucket filling students I know you are! Maybe some of you can read Seth a story when we visit!

Here are a few pictures I've taken of Seth in his first week of life! Enjoy!
This is the first outfit Seth wore when he was in the hospital.

Newborn babies are very sleepy!

Having a big stretch just before Seth left the hospital.

We are already trying to get Seth to love curling as much as we do!

A little smile to say hello!

Out for our very first walk outside. We are so glad it's nice outside!

He loves stretching, and his fuzzy blanket to nap on.

He turned 1 week old on Tuesday, March 1, 2016.

We are going to take pictures with his bunny and special blanket to watch him grow and change!

Thanks for reading! Have a great week!

Students try the words out for the first official time today in the "check up". We've talked lots about how it is important to try your best to stretch the word out today, but by Friday we will have worked on these lots at school, and hopefully at home too. This week students are encouraged to set a goal for how many they hope to get right on Friday when we check in again. Their word lists came home today; try and take a few minutes this week to go over these.

Happy New Year! Jan 4-8

Welcome back! Happy 2016!

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas Holidays, and a joyful New Year.

We have NO January birthdays. Hard to believe. It's also hard to believe that this is my second last blog post! My last teaching day is Friday, January 15, 2016. I'm so excited to spend these last 2 weeks with the students, and I can't wait to see how much we can learn before I go! That being said, watch in the agenda this week for a note going home with more information on my leave, and who will be taking over.
Secret Blog Question: What is the name of your new teacher, who will start on Monday, January 18. Write the answer in your agenda for a little treat.

Thursday, January 7, 2016
  • You shouldn't have any library books at your house right now, however, if you do, please return them before today so you can take out new books. If you have lost some library books, please try and bring in the replacement money ASAP. It is school library and book mobile today! Hurray for new books!
Weather News: -20 Degree Celcius
All students are to play outside as long as the weather is not below -20 degrees celsius. Please make sure students are dressed properly everyday, as our weather frequently likes to change mid day. Students need proper outdoor footwear (boots preferably), warm coats, snow pants, mittens, and a toque. If you need help getting winter gear, please let us know and we will do our best to find something!

Christmas Celebrations!
Even though Christmas has come and gone, I couldn't help but post a few of the highlights from our festivities!
We wrapped up our Gingerbread theme the best way I knew how, by decorating cookies. This was a lot of fun, and I wish I would've taken pictures of all the finished projects. Hopefully students enjoyed eating those gingerbread men over the holidays! Thanks to the parents who came to help us with this sticky activity!!!

Next we had a milk and cookies surprise waiting for us in the gym! What fun to eat, socialize, and sing Christmas carols together.
Notice the arms around each other, singing happily as a class! So fun!
On our last day of school we played a "minute to win it" game. This was great on many levels, mostly the noise level of the classroom while playing! The goal was to move as many marshmallows from the table to the cup using the straw and their lung power only. It was amazing how students attempted this, and even more amazing how well some teams worked together! Some of the teams below are moving so fast I couldn't even get a clear picture!

That wraps up this week. See you next week for my very last post of this school year.
Thanks for reading!

Christmas Holidays! There is no school until Monday, January 4th. On Friday students are being sent home with a Christmas reading challenge. Try and keep up the good reading habits you've created over the holidays. Not to mention, there are SO many great holiday books and most of you have your free mini library card if you need a low key event over the break.

A Peek at Last Week
The highlight of last week was of course the amazing Twinkle and Shine concert! Students did so well transitioning between the change of schedules and routines, and pulling off 2 incredible performances! Here are a couple pictures of the behind the scenes happenings of concert preparation.
Students brought their Christmas fun books to the gym. Most of the time the concert practice was too interesting thought!

We continue to use brain breaks to break up our learning time. Students love when they've been working hard and I pause them and ask them to stand behind their chairs. Last week I took a couple short video clips of our current favourite break "Crazy Santa Just Dance". I love the focus and participation, enjoy! :)

Lastly, I ventured over to Sobey's to check out the Gingerbread House display. I have to admit it took me quite a while to find it as it was tucked in a little sitting nook, but once it was spotted I was amazed at how many great gingerbread houses were there! What a neat fundraiser for the food banks.
We are the house in the bottom left.
Thanks for reading!

Wishing you and yours a terrific Christmas and a very Happy New Year! See you in 2016.

A Peek at Last Week
Most weeks we have a making words day. Students are given a variety of letters, and their first job is always to colour the vowels, and then put the letters in alphabetical order. From there, they listen to the words, and build many words using their letter combinations. We always start with small simple words, and work up the the secret word which uses all the letters. We've been working on the reading strategy chunky monkey, and this week we focussed on the 'ing' chunk while making words. Based on our learning last week, if you say "ing, ing" your child should respond "i-n-g".
Secret Blog Question: What was the secret word from making words last week? Blake and Caira both have it figured out in the pictures above. Write the secret word in your agenda! Hint we used these letters 'c, g, i, k, n, o, s, t'.
When we are working hard, students love being rewarded with a brain break. This is one example of what that could look like. As the Christmas holidays approach, I highly recommend checking out GoNoodle. It is full of different activities to get your child moving, as well as quieter activities to settle busy minds, and practice mindfulness.
Last week we focussed on the reading strategy of "sequencing". We are using gingerbread as a theme this December, and therefore used the book the Gingerbread Man to learn and practice sequencing. Good readers think and talk about the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Here Kenna and Wyatt completed a sequencing activity that tells what order the Gingerbread Man was chased in.
This week we will learn how good readers "make connections" and will be connecting and comparing a variety of gingerbread books.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Twinkle and Shine this week! Enjoy the show!
